Turnip Greens Curry

Ingredients :

Turnip green -1 bunch
Onion -1
Green chilli -2
Garlic -2 cloves
Oil -2 tbsp
Coriander powder -2 tsp
Chilli powder -pinch
Turmeric -pinch
Mustard seeds -1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds -1/2 tsp
Chana dal -1 tbsp(soak in water for 15 min)
Urad dal -1/2 tsp
Red chilli -2
Curry leaves -2
Hing -pinch
Salt to taste



Method :

Cut off the green leaves and stalks from the turnips and chop finely. Wash and boil in water for 10-15 minutes. Drain and keep aside. Discard water.

Peel and chop turnips into bite size pieces.

Peel onion and garlic chop finely.

Heat oil in a pan. Add  mustard,urad and cumin seeds. When the seeds begin to splutter, add broken red chilli and stir for 10 seconds.

Add onion, garlic and stir fry until oil separate from the onion looks golden brown.

Add  coriander and chilli powders and turmeric. Stir fry until oil separates again.

Add turnip pieces and stir-fry for a couple of minutes.

Now add soaked chana dal also.


Add boiled turnip leaves and salt, and mix. Cook covered on low heat, until tender. With fresh turnips, this takes only 10-15 minutes.

Taste and adjust salt and chillies.
Serves with hot rice and roti too.
